Information Security Magazine

I just starting receiving Information Security Magazine (through FreeBizMag.com). I was amused to read the editorial “Broken Windows, Indeed”. The authors of a Windows/Linux security study had hidden the fact that the study was paid for by Microsoft. The editor somehow managed to use that fact as a slam against Linux enthusiasts; I’m still confused how she managed that contortion. She then cited facts from the study that I thought had already been thoroughly debunked.

My confusion dissolved as I continued to flip through the magazine. I saw three full-page ads for Microsoft. I can understand trying not to offend your sponsors, but this was a bit obsequious.

Accident Prevention on the Cheap

In New York State, automobile insurance providers are required to take 10% off your automobile liability and collision premium for 3 years after you take an approved accident prevention course. Our 3 years have expired, and it’s time to take another course. This time, however, it’s a little more difficult to get away for the 6-hour course.

We had to decide whether it was worth

  • 6 hours of our time,
  • the hassle of arranging for someone to watch the kids,
  • and the boredom of listening for 2 hours to why we shouldn’t drink and drive

Then I realized that Geico had already solved the problem for us. Our liability premium is so low, it would cost more to take the course than we would save. Decision made!

Of course, I don’t want to miss the practical benefits of this course. So, why don’t you comment with your best tip for accident prevention. That’s got to be at least as valuable as hearing for the 17th time why I should keep 2 seconds behind the car in front of me.
